Into this bleak landscape, Athaba is born, a young wolf destined for great adventure. Exiled from his pack for breaking its rigid codes of behaviour and showing too much imagination, Athaba becomes a 'raven wolf', a lonely scavenger living on scraps and his wits.
Survival in the icy wastes is hard and dangerous without the comfort and protection of the pack. Injured, and stranded far from home, Athaba is forced to strike up an uneasy alliance with his natural enemy: a man. Together, but ever wary of each other, the wolf and the solitary hunter start their long walk home across the wilderness.
It soon becomes clear that the man must learn to be a wolf if he is to survive in the wolf's world. And Athaba has to use all his imagination to learn new skills and strategies to fend for himself and his new pack member: for he discovers that men are frail, and often very ignorant!

Forse il pregio più importante del libro è inserire un insolito quantitativo di valori morali da parte di questo autore. Il rapporto che si crea tra il lupo Athaba e l'umano da lui chiamato Koonama è un classico "survival in the wild" di un uomo lasciato al di fuori dalla civiltà che per sopravvivere deve accompagnarsi ad un lupo e che riesce non solo a ritornare alla civiltà ma ad assorbire qualcosa del mondo selvaggio della natura che mai lo lascerà. Il tutto visto interamente dal punto di vista del lupo, con una serie di ironie e di lampanti incomprensioni (chiarissime a noi lettori umani).
Positiva la risoluzione del loro rapporto, inclusi i due incontri accidentali (anche se il primo lo è meno accidentale di quel che pensi Athaba) che marcano bene la conclusione del libro.
Difetti
Spietatezza del branco
La prima parte del libro mi ha lasciato abbastanza stizzito: è pratica comune nella letteratura animale descrivere lo stile di vita dei lupi come decisamente violento mescolando realismo a pratiche semi-tribali. Ma non avevo mai visto una ottusità ideologica e spietatezza, quasi rasentando l'illogico come quella mostrata dal branco di nascita del protagonista, l'autore a parer mio ha calcato fin troppo la mano su questo punto esagerando non poco.
Fase centrale lenta
Tutta la parte centrale del viaggio dell'umano e del lupo attraverso la tundra è ... decisamente troppo prolungata e ripetitiva. Concordo sul fatto che sia uno degli aspetti chiave del libro, ma inevitabilmente questa arriva a "schiacciare" e prendere molto spazio al finale: la conclusione principale del plot è descritta anche se un filo troppo stringata, e l'epilogo finale è fin troppo accelerato. Avrebbe potuto benissimo ridurre uno o due capitoli centrali (ripetitivi al rischio di diventare noiosi).
