As the multi-threaded story unspools, The Sandman descends into Hell to confront Lucifer (Michael Sheen), chases rogue nightmares who have escaped his realm, and crosses paths with an array of characters from DC comic books, ancient myths, and real-world history, including: Inmates of Gotham City's Arkham Asylum, Doctor Destiny, the muse Calliope, the three Fates, William Shakespeare (Arthur Darvill), and many more.

A powerhouse supporting cast helps translate this masterwork into a sonic experience worthy of its legacy, including Riz Ahmed, Kat Dennings, Taron Egerton, Samantha Morton, Bebe Neuwirth, Andy Serkis, and more. Setting the stage for their performance is an unprecedented cinematic soundscape featuring an original musical score by British Academy Award winner James Hannigan. Fans will especially revel in a new twist for the audio adaptation: Neil Gaiman himself serves as the narrator. L'adattamento audio realizzato da Audible, adattato e diretto da Dirk Maggs è un piccolo capolavoro che rende pienamente giustizia alla serie creata da Neil Gaiman.
Interpretata da un cast di tutto rispetto e arrangiata con musiche ed effetti speciali che, per una volta, non mi sono sembrati invasivi, l'audiodrama copre e primi tre volumi della serie: Preludes & Nocturnes, The Doll's House e Dream Country.
La voce narrante è quella dello stesso Gaiman, non nuovo alla lettura dei suoi romanzi. Il cast, come già detto, raccoglie nomi famosi su entrambe le sponde dell'Atlantici.
Da James McAvoy nei panni di Morpheus (e che avevamo già ascoltato come Richard Mayhew in Neverwhere: BBC Dramatisation), Andy Serkis, Arthur Darvill, Michael Sheen (niente Aziraphale da Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch solo Lucifer) e Joanna Lumley.
L'interpretazione è ottima e la trasposizione da fumetto ad audio non penalizza troppo il risultato e, anche se non si è familiari con la serie, la comprensione non ne risente.
Il solo lato negativo è che sono stati drammatizzati solo 3 volumi su 11 (senza contare le uscite satelliti) in totale.
Speriamo abbia un buon successo e che Audible decida di proseguire l'adattamento.
