Ho riportato la trama (se così si può chiamare) in inglese perché trovo irritante quella fornita sia nel libro che nei vari siti, ottimo riassunto dell'intero romanzo nel dettaglio, che quindi non assolve il suo dovere di semplice "trama".
Per quanto riguarda il libro:
Storia un po' troppo rapida, sbrigativa, tanto da risultare un po' superficiale in alcuni punti; ne risente soprattutto la parte iniziale, mentre è un po' più equilibrata la "vecchiaia" di Tess, molto profonda. Il tono malinconico di quest'ultima è forse la parte più pregevole del racconto. Peccato per l'ultimo nefasto accadimento di cui si fa cenno anche nella trama, l'ho trovato un po' forzato.
