David Robert Jones nasce a Brixton, Londra, l'8 gennaio 1947. La madre, Margaret Mary Burns, che ha già un figlio, Terry, dal primo matrimonio, lavora in un cinema del quartiere. Il padre, Haywood Stenton Jones, da poco tornato dal fronte, è impiegato. Il fratello Terry, figlio di primo letto della madre, soffre di schizofrenia e passerà lunghi anni in ospedale psichiatrico dove morirà suicida nel 1985. "Mio fratello Terry ha avuto una grandissima influenza sulla mia vita" confesserà David anni più tardi "mi ha fatto conoscere autori che certo non consigliavano a scuola, come J. Kerouac, A. Ginsberg, E .E. Cummings,... e mi ha fatto avvicinare al jazz e al rock'n'roll americani". All'evento Bowie dedicherà nel 1993 la canzone Jump, They Say. Nel 1957 la famiglia Jones si trasferisce nel quartiere periferico di Bromley, dove David frequenta la Bromley Technical High School. Nel 1959 ottiene in regalo il suo primo sassofono e inizia a studiare musica. Nel 1962 in seguito ad un pugno violento dell'amico George Underwood, la pupilla sinistra resta irreversibilmente lesa, accentuando così la particolarità di uno sguardo singolare che fa sembrare apparentemente diverso il colore degli occhi: uno azzurro e uno verde/marrone.
